ABOUT US

The University of Warwick Chess Alumni Association was set up in Autumn of 2021. Seeing off the Covid-19 pandemic, it marked an opportune time to build and grow the group of Warwick Chess alumni, who had stayed in touch. Credit goes to the hard work of Jack Huffer, who ran the original team of alumni in the West Midlands Online League, during the pandemic.

In October of 2021, several generations of chess alumni were invited back to Warwick, for an informal reunion and to play at the Birmingham Rapidplay. By the end of the weekend, those present founded the Association. The aim was to provide fellow alumni with more competitive chess, social reunions, and a general networking opportunity.

Since then, the Alumni has grown from strength to strength, with trips to the Bristol Rapidplay, a 2021 Christmas Meal in London, Chess Boxing at Tufnell Park, Skool Days with the Society, a Graduation Celebration with five+ generations of alumni present, and also, had organised online and over-the-board matches against fellow chess alumni groups. Today, the Association is its own registered English Chess Federation club.

The Association, in February 2022, elected it's first permanent committee, and now fields three teams in the 2020 World Chess Championships.

In the spirit of the University of Warwick Chess Society (our sister club), the Alumni Association is committed to fostering and growing the game of chess, and cover all aspects of chess - from the social side of the game, to competitive chess, to general development, and giving back to the wider community around us.

If you would like to sign up to the Newsletter, or contact us, we would be happy to hear from you.
